With what seems like a new holiday hashtag popping up every day, it can become overwhelming to scroll through social media.  While some of these holiday hashtags seem rather trivial – #PJDay which promotes wearing your pajamas to work or #uglychristmassweater – brands rely on hashtags to get people to engage, share content, promote a cause, or celebrate.  However, not all holiday hashtags have to be an excuse to eat a doughnut or wear a Christmas jumper – some can create positive impact throughout the world.

One of the more recent holiday hashtags is #GivingTuesday.  Started in 2012, this global day of giving is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and follows the major shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  It helps to kick off the holiday season by promoting charitable giving, whether donating money or time.  Like the other holiday hashtags, it was fueled by the power of social media and is now home to national #GivingTuesday to over 50 countries across the world.1

With over 60,000 charitable organizations participating in the official movement, an estimated $274 million was raised in 2017 for non-profits.  Large companies joined the movement, including Facebook partnering with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to match $2 million in donations and JPMorgan Chase employees increasing their donations by about 23% to $4.7 million.2 

In the spirit of giving, CCM recently donated to many local organizations, including the United Way of Broward County and Feeding South Florida.  Charitable giving and community service are key attributes of our culture. In a few weeks, CCM will be participating in the United Way of Broward County’s Day of Caring and dropping off toys to Kids in Distress, Inc. for the holidays.  Also, our CCM Impact Awards Campaign is currently underway, where voters can pick their favorite 2018 CCM impact investment story.  The winning organization will receive a $10,000 donation.

Although charitable work and community outreach needs to continue beyond #GivingTuesday, this specific holiday hashtag is a nice reminder to think of those who are less fortunate, particularly at the start of the holiday season.
